On April 19th Colin Arisman and I will set off to hike the Pacific Crest Trail. A 2,650 mile hiking trail from the U.S Mexican border through California, Oregon, and Washington, finishing at Manning Park British Columbia. The trail takes about 5 months to complete going about 20-30 miles per day with a rest day every week or so. We plan to resupply in towns along the way as well as mail food ahead to ourselves.
I see this hike as a chance to immerse myself in nature and to live a minimalist lifestyle as I will only be caring the essentials. Technology has boomed over our generation and has begun to separate us from the natural world. Kids build forts and cities on computers rather then out in the woods behind their house. This hike is about slowing down and enjoying the basics of life.
Colin and I have decided to document our hike as we go and produce a film of our journey called “Only the Essentials” inspired by the quote “I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.” by Henry David Thoreau.
We want to share or story with others and show the power and beauty of the outdoors. We will film the spectacular views that are sure to greet us on the trail, the people and communities we meet along the way, and interviews of ourselves throughout the trip. We hope to enter the film in local Vermont film festivals upon its completion. Support our cause and spread the word by checking out our Kickstarter! We will also be blogging along the way, so subscribe to or blogs and follow us across the country!

Good for you, Casey. Sounds like a fabulous experience. I will be looking forward to reading your blogs. Did you know that your Aunt Karen is right now treking with her old Yale roommate in the Himalayas? Love and good luck, Grandma and Grandpa (who wishes he could go with you!).
